Safety Not Guaranteed

Last time I talked about movies, I told you how we score cheap tickets on daily deal sites or go to the theater on $1 nights. Well, the only price that beats that is free.

A few of my favorite shows are Parks & Recreation, New Girl, and The League so when an actor from each joins forces in the same movie, you know it’s gonna be good.

On Friday, R saw a tweet from Brightest Young Things about a ticket giveaway for Safety Not Guaranteed. All he had to do was use a promo code and BAM! Free tickets for an advanced screening. One caveat is that even with the free tickets, seating is still “first come, first serve” so last night we arrived an hour early to wait in line (about 40 people deep already).

Here’s a quick plot of Safety Not Guaranteed, starring Aubrey Plaza, Jake Johnson, and Mark Duplass.

When an unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it, they discover a mysterious eccentric named Kenneth, a likable but paranoid supermarket clerk, who believes he’s solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon.

Together, they embark on a hilarious, smart, and unexpectedly heartfelt journey that reveals how far believing can take you.

We absolutely loved the movie. Besides the touching and laugh out loud story, we got to see these TV stars in totally new roles. Johnson had a decent job and nice wardrobe, Duplass had a mini mullet and sweet martial arts skills, and Plaza…ok her character still had a bit of April Ludgate in her.

Brightest Young Things are, according to their Twitter profile, “daily magazine and party throwers dedicated to all things good (music, style, art, movies, design, photography…) in the District of Columbia and beyond.” If you’re not in the DC area, scout out a similar site in your city and share it with the group!
